LIMESTONE FOREST CAMPAIGN

The Limestone Forest is unique to the Appalachian Valley and Region in New Jersey. It consists of dense forest growing on limestone bedrock, which is covered by thin glacialtill. (view a map of the Limestone Forest Project Location)

The Limestone Forest contains many rare and endangered plants and animals. The limestone bedrock contains sinkholes, caves, springs, sinkhole ponds, vanishing streams, and rugged rocky pinnacles.

The sinkhole ponds found in this area support a community of rare plants and animals. Rocky limestone pinnacles support ferns, fern allies and rare flowering plants.

The forest is characterized by deciduous hardwood trees and conifers like white pine and hemlock that provide a protective canopy for native plants.

Amphibians, reptiles, migrating birds, raptors, bears, bobcat, and many other animals rely on the forest for food and shelter.

Protection of these forest preserves abundant ground-water recharge, which feeds springs and pristine streams in the region. RVC has already protected over 1,800 acres in the Limestone Forest region at a cost of more than $5 million.

We have identified the remaining undeveloped land in the Limestone Forest region and, with your help, plan on protecting as much of the forest in the next few years as possible. We ask that you help make this worthwhile effort succeed.

Please help Ridge and Valley Conservancy protect what's left of the ancient Limestone Forest with your tax-deductible contribution today.
