Dedicated to preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region of New Jersey

White Lake (Limestone Forest) ** Up coming Events 2008**
Location:

Hardwick (Warren County)

Acreage:

258 Acres

Acquired:

Closed September 1997. Fee Simple Transaction. The acquisition was the result of the collective efforts of the Ridge and Valley Conservancy along with the NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection-Green Acres Program, Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, Hardwick Township, and Warren County.

Features:

This acquisition will eventually connect the Paulinskill Valley Trail to our Ridge & Valley Trail, which will start at this site. This trail will eventually meander its way almost to the Appalachian Trail.

There are various habitats in this special piece: White Lake, the wetlands surrounding parts of the lake, a fen at the eastern end, a limestone forest, fields and a small section of hemlock forest.

The old Marlworks ruins are located here also. The main feature is the swampy area near the Marlworks which has many unusual plants such as walking fern, pitcher plants, slender yellow slippers, yellow (chinkapin) oak and many other interesting plants.

Located on this site are wintering long-eared owls, long-tailed salamanders, meadow fritillary butterfly, baltimore butterfly and the endangered metalmark butterfly.
