Dedicated to preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region of New Jersey

What We Do

Mission Statement

The Ridge and Valley Conservancy was formed to protect and preserve natural areas, including woodlands, meadows, farmlands, wetlands, marshes, ponds, watercourses, and historic sites that constitute the rural character of the Kittatinny Valley and Ridge Region of New Jersey. We are dedicated to promoting the public interest in conserving open space for aesthetic, recreational, cultural, ecological, agricultural, and development uses in harmony with the natural environment. The Conservancy may acquire important lands by purchase or donation, manage land uses for the benefit of the public, assist in stewardship for public lands and easements, and advise in environmentally sound land development for public or private use. Ridge and Valley Conservancy, Inc. is a non-profit corporation established exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purpose.

Who We Are

The Ridge and Valley Conservancy (RVC) is a non-profit land trust formed in 1990 by people dedicated to preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Appalachian Valley and Ridge Region of New Jersey. What is the Ridge and Valley Region?

Ridge and Valley Conservancy's preservation efforts are focused in the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region of New Jersey, which is part of a larger area extending along the Atlantic seaboard from Alabama to New York.

The region is ancient. Layers of limestone, shale and sandstone found in seas more than 500 million years ago old were formed during the creation of the Appalachian Mountains . Millions of years of erosion have left gentle limestone valleys, rolling shale hills, and tough sandstone ridge.

The region is rich in contrast, with its fertile limestone valleys filled with glacial sand and rugged rocky ridges. The natural wonders and cultural history of the Ridge and Valley Region are in part a product of its unique landscape.

What We Do

RVC preserves forest, farmland, wetlands, and historic sites in Warren and Sussex counties, NJ. We protect wildlife habitat, particularly for rare and endangered plants and animals, and important watershed lands. We work closely with other public and private conservation organizations to permanently protect land through purchase and through conservation easements.

We also work directly with landowners to help them choose the best way to preserve their land, whether by conservation easement, sale or gift. We will continue to work to protect the best places in this beautiful region before they are altered by development.
